My Zentangle Journey

My First Zentangle Tile

As a child, my process of using pencil and ink was very specific. I would draw a cartoon in pencil first, so I could erase and fix any mistakes I made. Then, when I was satisfied with the pencil drawing, I would trace over my pencil lines with ink pen to make my drawing more permanent. That was my process for many years. Eventually, pencil became my only medium. Ink was risky because couldn't be changed once it was down on the paper, so I avoided it completely.

One day, in my early 20's (after college & and art degree), I saw an image that was a beautiful, pattern-based drawing that claimed, "you can do this too!" It was called Zentangle and there was a certified teacher the next city over who taught classes. The class didn't cost much, so I signed up to give it a try. That class was hard. As a realistic artist who struggled to use ink, I stumbled through the class. In the end, the process was what caught my attention. I practiced on my own and eventually decided to dive head first into this drawing process and signed up to become a Certified Zentangle Teacher myself.

The summer of 2015 I journeyed to Providence, Rhode Island, where the original creators of Zentangle held their annual certification course. That weekend brought Zentangle to life for me. It opened a door to a world of endless possibilities, and the realization that truly anyone can do this! I have loved teaching it to others ever since!
