Importance of Choosing the Right Photograph

The quality of the photograph greatly dictates the final drawing! Being able to observe details in a person's face, hair, clothing, etc. is the key to an realistic drawing.
THINGS TO THINK ABOUT WHEN CHOOSING A PHOTO

Disclaimer: I understand not everyone has
access to a professional camera. However, our smartphones take pretty good pictures these days and these tips can help you pick several good photos out of the ones you do have.

Distance
  • The subject of the photo should be larger in the photo frame (close-up) instead of smaller (further away). The smaller they are, the less details are visible and harder to reproduce in a drawing.

Clarity
  • The clarity of a photo (how blurry or clear it is) can alter the end result of the drawing.
  • FILTERS - I love a good photo filter, but filtered and blurry images are difficult to use as reference images and rarely produce a good drawing.
Special Circumstances
  • Sometimes there is only one option of a photo, and that is okay, I can still draw it. I will review the photo and provide information about which areas are difficult for me to observe. It's important to remember that the quality of the drawing may not turn out as well as some other drawings in my portfolio.
Example of the Difference in Two Reference Images
This reference photo has an Instagram filter, some bright highlights on one face and not many highlights or shadows on the other.
This reference photo was taken at by a professional photographer.
